Song of the Whale is fitted with an Automatic Identification System (AIS) as part of its navigation and safety equipment. AIS is a system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and AIS Base stations via VHF radio. AIS information is used to supplement radar as a means of collision avoidance.
